Under the Microscope – CBD Hemp Flower Bioavailability

Get the microscope out because we have one thing to zoom in on today and that is all the intricacies of CBD hemp flower bioavailability in our bodies. This is something that not only about CBD but it is also about all other drugs that we take. The destination target for CBD hemp flower is the CB2 receptors of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The reason for this is that it is where it can do its healing or balancing the system or quelling that relentless pain.

Bioavailability is about two things – the potency of what you consume, smoke or vape and the method you consume, smoke or vape.  So, when you are purchasing your CBD product, it is important to be attentive to the potency. Ask for the Certificate of Analysis (COA) of the product to confirm its potency.

CBD Hemp Flower Bioavailability —

When consumed orally, CBD has to be processed by the liver and other digestive organs, so it loses a percentage of its potency. CBD has to reach the bloodstream in order to interactive with the ECS. If you take more CBD in whatever form you choose to consume, smoke or vape than you need in the moment, the excess CBD is stored in your fat cells. If enough CBD is consumed, The CBD can remain in the fat cells for days waiting for the time that you need it then gradually it will be released by the ECS.

The CBD Hemp Flower Bioavailability – The 1st Pass Effect

The 1st pass effect or 1st pass metabolism refers to drug metabolism if that drug is consumed orally. This also applies to CBD consumption even though not referred to as a drug. When CBD is consumed orally, its potency is greatly reduced before it reaches your systemic circulation. Part of the potency is lost during the digestive system process and part is absorbed in the liver and gut wall.

When a drug is swallowed, it is absorbed by the digestive system then through the hepatic portal and is carried through the portal vein to the liver.  With some drugs, by the time it leaves the liver, there is only a small amount of the potency remaining. Where CBD does its work is when it reaches your circulatory system and meets up with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The 1st pass through the liver in any case greatly reduces the bioavailability of the drug or in this incidence we are talking about CBD.

The CBD Hemp Flower Bioavailability – Dosing, Methods and Bioavailability

When CBD is consumed at a high dosage orally, it is absorbed by the fatty cells. Why is that important? It is important because it can better provide benefits for chronic conditions throughout the entire day. High-dose oral CBD would be about 150-600 mg/day.  Many consumers experience a satisfactory resolution of their chronic pain, anxiety and many other conditions by consuming a 15 mg capsule morning and night.

Methods of consumption are smoking, vaporization, oromucusal, and others. The averages for CBD bioavailability by method of administration are as follows:

  • 6% – 15% for oral (swallowed and digested by the GI system)
  • 35% for oromucosal (absorbed directly through the mouth)
  • 40% for vaporized (absorbed through the lungs)

Dosage of CBD should follow the old adage “start low, go slow” not because there is the risk of overdose but because it is best to be accurate.  Experts recommend a dose of 5 to 10 mg daily if you are dosing with a tincture and increase it as you feel you need. Everyone has a different weight and a different metabolism and here is another point you need to consider. What is it? You need to consider your particular health challenge.

I personally use CBD Isolate Roll-On for the osteoarthritis in my joints because, in my experience, the CBD tincture did not work as well for that particular health challenge I have. I also dissolve CBD-infused gummies under my tongue for energy and as a mood stabilizer. This is what works best for me but it took me awhile to find what worked best. Don’t give up even if it takes time to find your sweet spot. Many use 50 mg to 100 mg or more per day.

CBD Hemp Flower Bioavailability — CBD Tinctures and Sprays

Oromucosal types of sprays report up to 90% absorption. If you can increase the length of time the tinctures and sprays remain in the mouth can increase overall absorption which is one aspect of bioavailability. It is recommended to hold the CBD liquid under the tongue for 30-60 seconds before swallowing.
