Are you sick of traffic jams and looking for a way to get home faster? If you want to commute and see Antwerp from a different perspective, leave your car at home and enjoy a trip on the Waterbus in Antwerp.
The Waterbus was made a permanent way to commute and tour in Antwerp in 2017 and has been an important part of our daily lives since. PREMIER SUITES Antwerp is less than 20-minutes’ walk from door to water and a perfect base to stay for visitors, commuters, corporate travellers, and those working on the waterways.
ABOUT THE WATERBUS SERVICE
Water Bus was established in July 2017 by the Port of Antwerp and is a new and more efficient alternative to buses, cars, and trams. The water bus connects Hemiksem with Antwerp and is a great alternative to a traditional road-based commute. Since January 2021, DeWaterbus is organized by Maritime Services and Coast services, who also runs the ferry services on the river Schelde.
WHERE DOES THE WATERBUS GO?
The boat travels from Hemiksem to Steenplein and stopping in Kruibeke and it takes approximately 30 minutes. You can combine the water bus with other ferry services to get from A to B with ease. There are connecting ferry services between Hemiksem and Bazel, Hoboken and Kruibeke and Linkeroever and Antwerp. Passengers are easily transported over the Scheldt via 6 departure points with plans to expand Antwerp’s water bus to other departure points in the future. The aim is to make the Waterbus a viable alternative to busy commuter traffic for those working and living along Antwerp’s waterways.
WHEN DOES WATERBUS RUN?
The ferry usually departs once an hour and from October until springtime, every thirty minutes. DeWaterbus runs from the very early morning until late at night for people working in shifts. Check departure times on the official website, checking the time from your selected stop https://www.dewaterbus.be/en/scheldt. If you prefer to commute by bicycle, you can bring it with you on board free of charge. Dogs on a leash are also allowed on board.

The waterways in Antwerp are not just used to commute. You can have some very educational, fun, relaxing and exciting times with you enjoy a river cruise. River Cruising is a quicker and more in-depth way to explore the city and the wider country rather than a huge, impersonal ocean liner. Smaller boats carrying up to 50 passengers offer a more authentic travel experience. Discover Antwerp’s stunning countryside, spectacular cities, and ancient towns from a new perspective. You can even arrange a trip between Antwerp and Amsterdam in The Netherlands, another fascinating city.
